How We Started

Slaght Homes’ first full scale home project was a renovation of the home of Henry and Lea Salzmann, grandparents of David Slaght, owner of

Slaght Homes, LLC.

In 1955, Henry F. Salzmann started working on his house. He was a World War Two veteran; a Purple Heart recipient who fought his way from the beach in Anzio, Italy, all the way to Munich, Germany. Now an auto mechanic with a wife and two children, Henry couldn’t afford to buy a finished house, and was thrilled to find a bargain at 83 Fresh Pond Road in East Brunswick. Here, someone had poured a foundation and started erecting a frame, but then lost interest and sold the structure as-is for the cost of materials.

For two years, Henry worked on the house whenever he had the time to spare and the money to buy more supplies. He was the oldest of nine children, and his extended family chipped in as they could. While Henry put in the hardwood floors and sheetrock, his brother George built the cabinets, his brother Fred helped with brick work, and his

brothers-in-laws painted.

In 1957, Henry moved his family to their new home.

Henry lived in this house until the day before he died at the age of 98, a modest man proud of his service, his family, and the house he built. The family tradition continues, with home builder David Slaght, Henry’s grandson, updating the property.
